The Izadi Rioja Reserva is one of Robert Parker's favorite wines. Modern in style, it's a ripe and flashy Spanish red, dark and opulent, an amazing find from Eric Solomon. Crafted by the Anton family, owners of another Wine Buyer favorite Finca Villacreces, they put the Izadi winery on the map in 1997 when they hired Mariano Garcia, the 30+ year winemaker at famed Vega Secilia. Together with Angel Ortega, they crafted what is now recognized as the winery style: robust, modern and refined. 100% older-vine Tempranillo (45 years) that thrives in the clay-limestone soils and in a microclimate influenced both by elevation and the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. This provides the raw materials to craft a Rioja Reserva that retains a modern expression of fruit and sweet tannins on release but with the complexity to develop for decades.
