A Super Tuscan that needs little introduction, the 2018 vintage for Antinori's Villa Rosso could be the best ever...It's certainly the highest rating that Decanter has ever given! The term "Super Tuscan," coined by Robert Parker in the 1970's is a fairly recent style in the long and illustrious history of wines made in Tuscany. The term describes red blends that are produced from grapes not native to the region, for instance Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2018 Villa Rosso blends Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Merlot to create a lush and intense palate, combined with the vivid acidity typical of Italian reds.
"Villa Antinori of the Antinori family was first created in 1928. Roast meat and coconut provide complexity to a rich nose of dark fruits. Great concentration of fresh but ripe cherry and mulberry, spiced by licorice and dark coffee. Ageing in French, Hungarian and American oak provides a pleasantly chewy texture, poised with elegant acids. Warm coconut and dark spices on the long finish. A treat at an affordable price."
